People ask me this all the time: "Is it actually worth booking a car to Niagara instead of just driving myself?" Fair question. The drive isn't hard. It's an hour and change down the QEW, and on a good day you barely notice it.

But here's the thing nobody tells you until you've done it. The traffic getting out of Toronto on a Saturday morning is its own little adventure, parking near the Falls in summer can eat 40 minutes and $30 before you've even seen the water, and the drive home after a long day (maybe a glass or two of wine in Niagara-on-the-Lake) is the part everyone quietly dreads. That's usually where a black car earns its keep.

What the trip actually looks like

We pick you up wherever you are — downtown condo, a hotel near Pearson, a house up in Vaughan. No meeting point, no lot to find. The car's clean, cold water's in the door pocket, and you're settled before you've finished your coffee.

From there it's a straight shot down the QEW along the lake. If it's your first time, ask the driver to take the Niagara Parkway for the last stretch instead of the highway. Why a private car beats a bus tour

Group tours are cheaper, sure. But you're on their clock. Forty minutes at the Falls, twenty at a gift shop you didn't ask for, and you're back on the coach before you've decided whether you want that second look.

• Table Rock for the classic Horseshoe Falls view — go early before the crowds.
• Niagara-on-the-Lake for lunch and a couple of wineries. This is the part most day-trippers skip and later regret skipping.
• The Whirlpool and the quieter spots along the Parkway that the buses never stop at.

Little things that make the day easier

Book the pickup earlier than feels necessary. Mornings at the Falls are calmer and cooler, and you'll thank yourself when the afternoon tour buses roll in. And if the plan is wine country, let the car do the driving both ways. That's the whole point.
